Granite Care & Maintenance
Buy Cleaners & Sealers
The natural stone your have purchased for your home
or office is an investment that will give you many
years of beautiful service. Stone is a natural product
and simple care and maintenance will keep it looking
beautiful. Here are some recommendations for routine
care and cleaning:
-
Clean stone surfaces with a few drops of neutral
cleaner, stone soap (available from Monticello
Granite) or a mild liquid dishwashing detergent
and warm water.
-
Use a clean rag for best results.
-
Too much cleaner or soap may leave a film and
cause streaks.
-
Do not use products that contain lemon, vinegar
or other acids on the granite the high acid content
may etch the surface.
-
Rinse the surface thoroughly after washing with
the soap solution and dry with a soft cloth.
-
Change the rinse water frequently.
-
Do not use scouring powders or creams; these products
contain abrasives that may scratch the surface.
Bath and Other Wet Areas
In the bath or other wet areas, soap scum can be minimized
by using a squeegee after each use. To remove soap
scum, use a non-acidic soap scum remover. Frequent
or over-use of an ammonia solution may eventually dull
the surface of the stone.
Do's
-
Do dust surfaces frequently
-
Do clean surfaces with mild detergent or stone
soap
-
Do thoroughly rinse and dry the surface after
washing
-
Do blot up spills immediately
Don'ts
-
Don't use vinegar, lemon juice or other cleaners
containing acids.
-
Don't use cleaners that contain acid such as bathroom
cleaners, grout cleaners or tub & tile cleaners.
-
Don't use abrasive cleaners such as dry cleansers
or soft cleansers.
-
Don't mix bleach and ammonia; this combination
creates a toxic and lethal gas.
What is Granite?
Granite is a coarse grained crystalline igneous rock
composed primarily of quartz and feldspar. It forms
from slowly cooling magma (silicate melt) that is subjected
to extreme pressures deep beneath the earth's surface.
With public awareness increasingly turning to the
use of natural materials in the home, Granite has become
the countertop of choice for today's kitchen designer.
Synthetic solid surface materials are no match for
the richness, depth, and stellar performance of real
granite. Unlike laminates and solid-surface materials,
a hot frying pan has no effect on granite's mirror
like finish. The diamond-like hardness of granite makes
it virtually impervious to abrasions, stains, and extreme
heat.
Most important: by choosing a granite countertop and
island, you not only give your kitchen timeless performance
and beauty, you increase the value of your home.

Sizes
Granite slabs are 58" to 74" high by 108" to
124" long by 3cm thick, the ideal size for kitchen
counter & vanity tops. All slabs vary in these
ranges and should be checked before specifying a specific
height or length
Choosing an Edge Style
Choosing an edge style is based
on 3 different principals.
Convenience
Certain edge treatments are easier to clean than others
based on creasing and curvature. Very elaborate
edges would take a little more maintenance than the
less complex ones. Also for families with young
children you may want to consider getting an edge that
is rounded on the bottom so when they are running around
the house and they bump their head on the counter all
they get is a bump.
Price
Depending on how much you’re willing to spend
on an edge is also a contributor to choosing a style. Some
edge treatments range higher in price than others based
upon the time and labor it takes to profile the edge.
Style
If its style you’re seeking than the best choice
to go with would be what is most flattering to the
overall appearance of the countertop and its surrounding
area. This would basically be the one that you find
to be most appealing.
Can I scratch or burn the surface of my granite countertop?
Granite is one of the strongest substances on earth.
The only household item that would be strong enough
to scratch the surface of your countertop would be
a diamond ring. As long as you’re not cutting
with a diamond studded carving knife no cutting board
should be necessary. Granite is completely impervious
to heat. Temperatures would have to reach 700
to 900 degrees Celsius to alter its surface; which
is physically impossible to reach in an everyday life
setting.
